Making Butter

Music by Taylor Swift, "Shake it Off"

The students wanted to experiment with how our ancestors created butter.  Did you know it is as simple as a Mason jar, heavy whipping cream and a little bit of elbow grease?

The students had several turns shaking the jar (with the help of Taylor Swift) and within ten minutes we had homemade butter.  The recipe is linked below if you would like to try it at home.

After we had separated the butter from the remaining water we added a little bit of cinnamon, honey and powdered sugar.  The students each had a taste on crackers.  The end result was delicious!

Try it at home using these directions!

If you would like to try the cinnamon butter follow the recipe below once you have created the butter in a jar.

Simple Cinnamon Butter

½ to 1 cup butter, softened
½ cup icing/confectioners' sugar (optional)
½ cup honey
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Turkey Talk

The students have been studying turkeys.  We read a variety of fiction and non-fiction books.  They gathered information about what turkeys have, listed what turkeys are, and what turkeys can do.   They used the information to write a small report about turkeys.  In addition, the students completed a directed drawing of a turkey and added their voice to make the turkey come to life.  Enjoy!!

Meet the Blends

The students have been practicing consonant blends.  Consonant blends are when two or more consonants are blended together in a word, but each consonant sound can still be heard.  We have practiced l, r and s blends so far this year.  Check out some of the blends that visited Room 104!

Applesauce Adventure

The children created a delicious applesauce from start to finish, in honor of John Chapman (a.k.a. Johnny Appleseed).  Of course, we topped it off with a little whipped cream and a graham cracker to give it the apple pie a la mode taste!

Morning Tubs

This year I decided to try something new with our morning routine.  Instead of paper/pencil tasks when the students arrive, the children can choose a "Morning Tub" to work on independently or the students can work with a partner.  The children are engaged with the activity as well as each other.  "Morning Tubs" promote socialization, provide choice (there are twenty tubs to choose from), encourage collaborative learning, and provide an opportunity for play as well as communicate with one another.

Below is a slideshow of the students engaged in their "Morning Tub" routine.

Happy 100th Day!!

We have spent 100 days together!  To celebrate the 100th day the students completed eight different activities and created a hat with 100 items on the bands.  A special thank you to Cara Carroll for her great planning and brilliant ideas that she shared on her blog to make this day so much fun.

The children created a marshmallow structure out of 100 marshmallows, built a structure out of 100 red cups, created a unique design from 100 pattern blocks, made a "gumball" machine using 100 sticker dots, created an ice cream cone with 10 scoops of ice cream and counted by tens, put 100 Hershey Kisses in order from 1 - 100, created a structure out of 100 connecting cubes and played "Race to 100" by rolling a die and marking a 100s chart.

Enjoy the video below and the song that we listened to throughout the day.
